The great and the good of the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Championship came together this past Saturday for the annual Awards Dinner Dance at the Windmill Village Hotel in Coventry, where 2015 champion Brian Chandler received his Championship trophy.

Personalities from up and down the grid were out in force to celebrate another fantastic year’s racing, with Darron Lewis and Ben Tuck also claiming their prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in the points respectively. The evening was hosted by BRSCC’s Media & Marketing Executive Scott Woodwiss, who has also featured on circuit commentary and presenting duties for a number of this year’s race meetings.

There were also winners outside of the main Championship Awards, as Chandler was also selected as the recipient of the coveted Spirit of Mazda Award, given to the person in the paddock who was deemed to have embodied the championship’s ethos throughout the season. In the Alternative Awards section of the evening for more light-hearted accolades, Clive Powles claimed the Off-Track Award, while racing debutant this season Alex Soar was the winner of the Pirouette Award for the most spins throughout the year.

A fun and entertaining night was had by all in attendance, which helped to round out the 2015 season in style. The all-important calendar for 2016 was also revealed on the night, with the line-up of meetings for next year set as follows:

Rounds 1 & 2 – April 2/3 – Snetterton 300
Rounds 3, 4 & 5 – May 7/8 – Anglesey
Rounds 6 & 7 – June 4/5 – Zolder, Belgium
Rounds 8 & 9 – June 25 – Oulton Park International
Rounds 10 & 11 – July 9/10 – Brands Hatch Indy
Rounds 12 & 13 – August 27/28 – Donington National
Rounds 14, 15 & 16 – September 17/18 – Rockingham ISSCL
Rounds 17, 18 & 19 – October 15/16 – Silverstone International

As you can see, the biggest change to the calendar is an inaugural European round for the Championship, as the drivers will get to tackle Zolder in Belgium for the first time. This race weekend will count for points in the same way as all the others, so anyone in the hunt for the title next year can’t afford to miss it!

There was also a fantastic end-of-season montage of track action from both the MX-5 Championship and its sister series, the MX-5 Supercup, played at the beginning of the evening. You can check it out for yourself HERE. A massive thanks goes to David Chapman and AJK TV for putting it together.

So, the curtain comes down on 2015 at last and what a season it’s been. Interest is already up for 2016, so if you’d like to join an already packed paddock for next year then be sure to get in touch. We’d love to have you with us!
